As of a few days ago, Microsoft killed the Windows Device Recovery Tool (WDRT) on their servers. As I write this you can't download the Windows application and if you try to run an installed copy of WDRT then it fails at the first hurdle when trying to check 'home' for a possible application update. The good news is that there's a patched version of the tool that still works just fine - at your own risk, of course! UPDATE: Now restored at Microsoft's end.
You can download the Windows Device Recovery Tool on your PC and use it to fix software problems on your phone. It'll install the latest version of Windows approved for your phone and remove everything else, including your apps, games, texts, call history, music, and photos. Before you use this tool, see if restarting or resetting your phone fixes the problem.
Yes. When you use this tool on a phone that's running a preview build, it will reinstall the latest version of Windows approved for your phone by its manufacturer. To start getting preview builds again, you'll need to go to Download Windows Insider Preview for phones to download the Windows Insider app on your phone, then follow the steps to install Insider Preview.
Thankfully, Microsoft has a few software recovery tools you can download, that allow you to reset and recover phone software. Most users will probably need the Windows Phone Recovery Tool (download link) for Windows, to restore their phones back to working order. After the tool is installed on a Windows PC, connect your Lumia phone, and in about 10 to 15 minutes your phone will be restored back to a working Windows Phone 8.1 mobile. For older phones, Microsoft recommends the Lumia Software Recovery tool (download link).
So if all else fails, give these software recovery tools a try. As both a Windows Desktop and Mobile Insider, I can attest the Windows Phone Recovery Tool works wonders: I've even used it successfully on beta versions of Windows 10 desktop to restore a Lumia back to Windows Phone 8.1.
Though Microsoft doesn't really do mobile operating systems anymore, it still offers the specialized mobile phone tool Windows Device Recovery Tool which can be used to revert your Windows Mobile phone to a previous version of firmware. The tool was designed to work with Lumia phones and Microsoft VR products. If things went wrong when upgrading your Windows phone to Windows 8 or Windows 10, you can use this official tool to go back to where you started when attempting to upgrade the operating system of your mobile device. As a free program developed by Microsoft, this application should run fine on all modern versions of Windows that have the .NET Framework installed. When running Windows Device Recovery Tool, you should have your mobile device connected with a proper USB data transfer cable. The app will check your device and whether its compatible and capable of running the tool. When complete, select the device inside of the interface of the connected device. Further steps will check whether there's an update available from the official servers. A few system settings will become available in further steps.Windows Device Recovery Tool will begin the installation of your desired Windows version when all of the steps have been completed. Keep in mind that you should keep your phone connected to your PC during the entire process.Features of Windows Phone Recovery ToolBackup: Easily create and store a backup of your Windows phone. Then go back to Fiddler, and use the targeting icon in the top toolbar to filter requests for the Windows Phone Recovery Tools by dragging the target over the Recovery Tools window. Fiddler should then look something like this (note the red text in the toolbar naming the recovery tools as the filtered target).
Now comes the fun part. In Fiddler, go to Rules->Automatic Breakpoints and select Before Requests. This tells Fiddler to stop before sending requests, allowing us to manipulate the HTTPS requests sent by the Recovery Tools. Go to the Recovery Tools and select your phone. The Recovery Tools should start sending some requests and once you see a request looking like this, select the variant text and change it to whatever variant you want the tools to download and flash (in my case i changed the product code 059Q9D7 to 059R645) and then click Run to Completion.Keep clicking Run to Completion on the subsequent requests until the Recovery Tools respond with the version that it found. Then after clicking the Reinstall Software button you'll need to manipulate the same request as you did in the beginning once more to start the actual download and flashing of the variant.
Aside from the bugs and other problems that might appear while testing the new software, Microsoft also warns that the Technical Preview is far from complete and has a bunch of known issues. Although, Microsoft has documented workarounds for many of the issues, the company has also created a new tool called the Windows Phone Recovery Tool that will help users to restore the previous image as necessary if you bricked your phone.
For some, installing and using the Windows 10 Technical Preview for Windows Phones has worked pretty well. But, for others, the ride has been a bit bumpy. Even handsets Microsoft reported to be supported for this first wave have had problems for one reason or another. Microsoft knew this would happen, so the company released a recovery tool along with the first Build so users can recover from frozen or trashed phones.
Rollback functionality was promised and Microsoft delivered, however, the mechanism is a bit different than everyone originally thought. The Windows Phone Recovery Tool is designed as a PC application. It should run on most versions of Windows, but I've confirmed that it works on Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9926, Windows 8.1, and Windows 7. So, instead of a function built directly into Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones, recovery requires that the Windows Phone be connected to an available USB port on a PC.
