Based on our critical reflection on nature and the concept of biomimicry, we conclude that the concept of biomimicry is a concept of the weak type. It is primarily a tool to make our technological innovations more ethical. We do not need a concept of nature in the concept of biomimicry, but we have to critically reflect on the concept of nature.
As we do not presuppose an ethical rightness of nature, we can see that the concept of biomimicry is not ethically instrumental as it claims, but as it is inherently ethically ambivalent. To what extent is nature legitimate as a measure for our technological innovations? To what extent is nature a legitimate actor to invent ourselves?
Our argument is that we should not presuppose the ethics of nature in the concept of biomimicry, but we should rather let nature speak for itself. If we want to critically reflect on the ethical rightness of our technological innovations, we need to critically reflect on the nature of technology, and thus we need to critically reflect on the concept of nature. This requires a more subtle concept of nature, which can be found in the weak concept of biomimicry. This concept is more aligned with a critical understanding of the concept of nature, which relies on a pragmatic understanding of nature.
The concept of biomimicry is not only ethically ambivalent, but also ethically confused. It doesn't tell us how we should relate to nature, to other animals, and to the ecosystem of planet earth.
If we would presuppose the ethics of nature in the concept of biomimicry, we would have to presuppose the rightness of nature and would need to change the concept of biomimicry itself.
Based on a further analysis of the concept of biomimicry, we develop the view that the concept of biomimicry is primarily used in (1) a heuristic sense in the sense of a search strategy, (2) to develop products and services in a more ethical way, and (3) to raise awareness about the ethical rightness of our technological innovations by employing an ecological model of technology.
The book, in a brilliant mix of history, background, and case studies, made the case that these innovations were not only environmentally and socially conscious, but were also economically savvy. And the more we look to nature, the more we are finding that the world's problems are related to a failure of imagination, not a lack of technology.
Do natural systems provide ethical standards for technological design?
Do technological innovations of nature's communities and ecosystems, i.e. nature, provide ethical standards for design in technology?
It is the first book in English to define the practice of biomimicry and explain why it is so valuable. It is not a book of theory, but a practical guide to the study and imitation of nature for the benefit of a civilization that has lost its connection to the natural world.
