I find it ironic that Shaw first tried to bring about this masculine state of society - with the domination of women - by appealing to the hysteria and hypocrisy of Britain's middle classes. His book lost him his place at a London University and attracted the fierce hostility of his new principal. But times have changed, and bourgeois feminists have a dilemma: Can you appeal to the middle classes again (even though the patriarchy they now favor was a far cry from the aristocracy of the 19th century)?
That's what you need to do with these guys. The show is brilliant, and David Paterson's direction is superior, but playing these fools is never a good idea. All they can do is make a fool of themselves; they can never redeem themselves.
Hegel's remark about history is applied less directly to political than it is to social life. In that sense, the 18th century was the most open: people, ideas, and institutions rocked free associations, reacting to the ebbs and flows of the times. That's no longer the case.
